Since people connected to shooting (military, competitors or hunters) have to spend a lot of time on different firing ranges, training facilities, hunting lands etc., and not just stand or walk there but constantly move, change positions and levels, they have a certain set of requirements to such a usual garment item as pants. Shooters are humans first (and then shooters) so they need pants that are comfortable and only then have specific features.
This is why Ukrainian military and field brand P1G-Tac®, in their attempt to create pants optimized for such circumstances has included following features to their Frogman Shooter’s Pants by P1G-Tac®:
- 12 pockets.
- Tight fit and additional ventilation.
- Ability to install soft padding or rigid kneepads.
- Flats built into trouser legs that protects from dust, mud, debris etc.
- Nylon reinforcements in the knee, lower leg and pocket areas.
- YKK zippers.
- Core material: Profit-on with RipStop reinforcement (65% cotton : 35% polyester).
- Available colors: Black, Olive, Coyote.
In today’s review we will be looking at Frogman Shooter’s Pants by P1G-Tac® in Coyote color.
Not to break their own habit, P1G-Tac® is packing their goods into cloth bags that make item’s storage and transportation to the shooting range a bit easier. And, if getting to the range is a half of the deal, then packing dirty pants that are wet from sweat or precipitations after your exercise causes hard feelings. These cloth bags with tie-downs and cord lock closure would help you not to wash each item that had contact with your pants inside your bag or pack. While you are getting back home, your pants would start to dry out with the help of the air that gets into the bag. Such a feature is uncommon for plastic bags by the way.
Now more details about the Frogman Shooter’s Pants by P1G-Tac® itself.
Profit-On, consisting from 65% cotton and 35% polyester, was selected as a core material for the pants. The cloth has RipStop reinforcement that blocks further tearing upon cuts or punctures, and better resist abrasion from rocks and gravel that are frequently used on the ranges. The material itself has made a good account in Mabuta MK-2 Suit by P1G-Tac® and Mount Track MK-2 Suit by P1G-Tac® that we had reviewed previously.
Frogman Shooter’s Pants by P1G-Tac® are made in rather loose cut, that allows moving freely and provides a good airflow. Thanks to the cut and material dries out quickly if it gets wet.
In front, Frogman Shooter’s Pants by P1G-Tac® have two cut-in pockets and rather big reinforcements around the knees. We will talk about those a bit later.
Two pockets are also available on the back.
The sides have pockets for smaller items on top, four hip pockets (a bit later about them as well) and two shin pockets.
From overall review we are moving to the detailed description of each feature, and there is plenty of them, I may say. We will start from the belt.
In the front Frogman Shooter’s Pants by P1G-Tac® are locked with metal YKK zipper and two buttons, one of which has the “British” attachment strap. The strap allows button to move a bit, preventing it from ripping away. Another smaller button just adds some stability and security.
In front you can also see two belt loops that have 5 cm. width and allow weaving belts up to six centimeters in height. There are two elastic loops that can be used to attach shoulder suspenders.
In the back belt has three belt loops with similar width. Central loop also has elastic for suspenders.
Black rounded flaps that you see in the photo above are the components of the adjustment system. From one side they are sewn to elastic straps, from another – attach via Velcro. This system allows getting tight and comfort fit for Frogman Shooter’s Pants by P1G-Tac® without using the belt, and elastic sewn into the belt of the pants provides flex when bending, kneeling, etc. so that pants do not restrict motion and do not jump up. Besides that, this solution does not require layering of core material, using buttons or metal buckles etc. what makes Frogman Shooter’s Pants by P1G-Tac® comfortable when used together with WarBelts\BattleBelts. This comfort is also achieved with the help of padding, placed behind the Velcro that is seen in the image above.
Frogman Shooter’s Pants by P1G-Tac® front pockets are wide enough to allow access even when your hands are in the shooting or tactical gloves like Frogman Field Gloves by P1G-Tac® I am wearing in the photo above.
Closer to the outer seam Frogman Shooter’s Pants by P1G-Tac® have a smaller pocket for knives and other items of the same size. To protect it from damage caused by metal clips and sharp edges inner and outer pocket plane is made out of dense nylon. Pocket’s height is about 6-9 cm. that allows placing small foldable knives, Swiss Army Knives (SAK), multi-tools, EDC flashlights (like Fenix LD10 shown above) and other little objects you need at your fingertips.
Do not forget to secure those items additionally with the help of lanyards, retainers or cord. Just in case.
Larger items could be placed into front pockets, but I would prefer the manufacturer to make these vertical pockets a bit higher, so it could fit larger folders or tactical\search flashlights like Fenix TA20 or Fenix UC35.
Back pockets with approximate size of 15 x 21 cm. (width\height) are protected with flaps that prevent dust, dirt and debris from getting in even if you happen to sit, fall on your butt or crawl a lot. In order to get in you need to bend this flap upwards and undo the Velco. These same flaps would protect small items from falling outside.
Main cargo containers of the Frogman Shooter’s Pants by P1G-Tac® are the hip pockets sized about 20 x 20 cm. (width\height). Pocket openings are protected by flaps with Velcro, similar to those located on the back pockets. Cargo pockets have two functional creases that give them a lower profile then pockets are empty and allow them to expand when full.
Frogman Shooter’s Pants by P1G-Tac® cargo pockets are also distinctive from the organizational point of view. Closer to the inner wall they have two-inch elastic strap separated into three slots that are seen in the photo above. These slots can secure a wide variety of items from spare magazines up to protective cases for your shooting glasses, so that they won’t displace or get shuffled when you move actively. Different pants I have used before were lacking straps like these.
In fact, there are four hip pockets in Frogman Shooter’s Pants by P1G-Tac®. Another flat pocket sized 15 x 16 cm. (width\height) is located on top of the main cargo pocket and is separated from it via mesh wall. It can be accessed through a vertical YKK zipper in front of the hip. This pocket could be used not only for carrying flat items, but also as an additional ventilation opening that provides air circulation for hips and knees.
Knee area on Frogman Shooter’s Pants by P1G-Tac® is additionally reinforced with nylon inserts and deserve a special mention. Firstly, these reinforcements allows changing stances and levels, crawling and sit or lay on your knees (while preparing kindling for your fire let say) freely. Reinforcements protect core material of the pants dust, debris, abrasion and damage and partially from moisture and dirt.
Secondly, Frogman Shooter’s Pants by P1G-Tac® knee reinforcements have two openings on both sides that are shown in the photo above. They can be used as additional venting holes providing better thermal balance and draining sweat away from knees and hips, as well as for routing kneepad straps outside.
Inside in a special area shown above, Frogman Shooter’s Pants by P1G-Tac® can secure soft pads from polyurethane as well as hard kneepads like Light Weight Pads by P1G-Tac® or Arc’teryx Knee Caps and others. So pants can provide you with a required protection level from light (breathable pants with nylon reinforcements) to moderate (polyurethane inserts) and heavy (integrated hard kneepads).
Lower on the shank each pant has an expandable pocket sized 10 x 12 cm. (width\height) with a flap on Velcro that is intended to carry tourniquets, bandages or gauze pads to fight bleeding or trauma. These pockets have functional creases allowing them to expand once they are filled. Bandages really fit in well, expanding the pocket outside, instead of pressing its inner wall to your leg. While testing they fitted NAR Combat Application Tourniquet (C-A-T), SWAT-T Tourniquet and Israeli FirstCare Emergency Bandage 4″ with no problems.
Remaining features – dust cloaks, are closing our review. These gaiters with draw strings hidden inside the pants could be wrapped on top of the boots. This solution is a kind of a compromise between tightening your pants in order to block dust, dirt and debris from getting inside and ability not to tuck the pants into the boots so that water, dirt and moisture can stream down your pants without getting inside the boots. Also in the photo above you can see the nylon inserts reinforcing the mouth of the pant. They in its turn prevent abrasion and the wear off for the core material caused by rubbing against ground or boots.
Frogman Shooter’s Pants by P1G-Tac®, in my mind, are a good solution for competitive shooters, instructors in marksmanship, combat casualty care, martial arts and knife fighting, hunters, fishermen, professional and amateur hikers, military games (airsoft, paintball etc.) fans. In general everyone who requires comfortable, reliable and good quality field pants but does not have to wear BDUs or uniform.
